Mom is above the knife
… That must be the opposite of saying that Mom is under the knife 
Operation is done and according to the surgeon and the medical nurses from the hospital: the operation went well. According to them, it’s now "just" about recuperation and after that rehabilitation.
Of course from a human point of view: things are different: mom sweat a lot and was a bit in pain last night + her toilet habits are "a bit different" than before she went into surgery.
Now we are already familiar with the side effect of pain medication, so we will wait and see what tomorrow brings…
First impression sounds like all is ok
